Lynn Ahrens

Written by ChrisRick on Thursday 21 February 2008

American lyricist Lynn Ahrens was born 1 October 1948 in New York. She graduated from Syracuse University and later began work in television in the 1980’s but would find true acclaim in the 1990s on Broadway when she and long-time colleague Stephen Flaherty combined to write the music and lyrics for Once on this Island based on the novel by Rosa Guy, My Love My Love. The show opened in April 1990 and was on Broadway by mid-October of the same year. The show would receive eight Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

But they did not stop there. They later collaborated on Ragtime which originally opened in Los Angeles in 1997 but later went to Broadway and was nominated for 13 Tony awards in 1998 and won 4 including Best Original Music Score. The show would go on for a remarkable 861 performances on Broadway.

Right around the same period she collaborated again with Flaherty for success but this time they delved into the colorfully-inked world of animation when they wrote the score and lyrics for 20th Century Fox’s Anastasia and received 2 Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song, Journey to the Past and Once Upon a December. They also pulled in 2 Academy Award nominations, one for Best Original Song for Journey to the Past and another for Best Original Score.

The duo has continued their collaborations and come up with other successful musicals including Seussical the Musical in 1999 and A Man of No Importance in 2002 which received the 2003 Outer Critic’s Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.

Other awards she has been nominated for include the Golden Satellite, Annie, and the ASCAP which she won in 1999 for the song At the Beginning from Anastasia as Most Performed Songs from Motion Pictures. More recently she worked on Deesa Rose in 2005 which garnered her a Dramatists Guild Hull-Warriner Award nomination and The Glorious Ones which premiered in New York’s Lincoln Center in 2007.
